Colorful Persian Wedding Ideas
We are definitely lovers of texture, and this vibrant photoshoot is chock full of it! From the fluttering effect of the table linens to the glittering gold tapers to the plush velvet cushions, we are simply in awe. One of Allium Design’s most important goals for this shoot was incorporating real Persian wedding traditions into a modern celebration that’s truly one-of-a-kind. Ashley Errington Photography doesn’t miss a single detail in her collection of images!
From the stylist and floral designer, Allium Design: We recently met with a couple who is planning a Persian wedding for next season. I had never participated in a Persian wedding and was absolutely overcome with the beauty and symbolism involved. Central to the wedding is a Sofreh Aghd, a traditional ceremonial table. When I read more about all of the elements on this table, I couldn’t help but use a few to recreate our own, albeit, pared back version.
Our photographs are just a small sampling of what is featured at the table. First, we had a mirror-a symbol of light. In the ceremony this is usually the first place the couple will see each other-looking into the mirror. Then we used what are considered the “herbs and spices”, including wild rice, poppy seeds, salt and black tea, meant to ward away evil. We also had nuts, symbolizing fertility and flatbread, meant for prosperity for the feast and the couple’s life. We piled up pomegranates and apples for a joyous future. And, in a comic gesture, a needle and thread, meant to “sew” a mother-in-law’s lips from speaking ill of the bride. A holy book is also present, symbolizing a blessing for the couple. Our favorite part by far is the honey, meant to sweeten life. As a part of the ceremony, the couple feed each other honey with their fingers.
While the Sofreh Aghd is clearly the central focus of the wedding, we added other elements that would absolutely sing with vibrant color. We brought rich magentas and fuschias in with gorgeous textured linen on the tablescape, a strung fabric teepee and a purple settee. We added fruits to the centerpiece to repeat what was happening in the ceremony and enjoyed some donuts with pistachios and honey for a sweet touch. As your can imagine in our line of work, we see so many weddings that, while beautiful, feel so similar to one another. For us, this photoshoot was an adventure in adding something exotic and enticing… ceremonial elements from another culture, especially ones so steeped in history. I can’t thank my couple enough for sharing their rich heritage and inspiring us!
